Funeral services for Andy Joe Montgomery, 72, of Moulton will be Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Moulton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Wannell Scott, Rev. Larry Wright, and Rev. Eric Brown officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Montgomery Cemetery.

Mr. Montgomery died Friday, April 12, 2024, at Lawrence Medical Center. He was born in Moulton on August 1, 1951, to Thomas Paul and Mary Helen Terry Montgomery.

Mr. Montgomery was a 1969 graduate of Lawrence County High School, where he was an all-county football player and team captain as a senior. He was an invited walk-on to the freshman football team at Auburn University, where he received a bachelor's degree in education in 1974. "Coach Andy" worked as a teacher at Lawrence County High School from 1974 until his retirement in 1998, coaching football, baseball, and basketball for 19 years. As head football coach for three seasons, his 1982 team had the only winning season at Lawrence County High School in a 15-year span. He was also head baseball coach for four seasons, winning the Lawrence County Tournament three times, and was an assistant coach on three state basketball tournament teams at LCHS. As a manager, player, or coach, he was a part of Lawrence County High School athletic teams for 25 years. A lifelong Auburn sports fan, he attended 67 consecutive Auburn-Alabama football games from 1957 through 2023. He was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather, and in his retirement his greatest joy was sharing his love of music and sports with his family.

Mr. Montgomery professed faith in Christ at age nine and was a faithful 63-year member of Moulton First United Methodist Church, where he sang with the church's bluegrass band. Fondly remembered for his singing at school assemblies and pep rallies, he also recorded three albums with his son, Robert.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Laurie Lambert Montgomery; one son, Robert Montgomery (Sara); two grandchildren, Jimmie Ray Montgomery and Annie Mae Montgomery; one brother, Harry Montgomery, all of Moulton; one nephew, Carson Montgomery; and one niece, Meredith Montgomery.

Pallbearers will be Clay Almon, Steve Almon, Jared Lambert, Carson Montgomery, Jimmie Ray Montgomery, Richard I. Proctor, and Arthur Warren Sanderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dwight Sanderson and Willard Terry.
